Group B: Middle School Science Scenario:

You have several seventh grade science classes collaborating on wikis. Students are divided into groups and are collecting information on each of the kingdoms of living organisms. The wikis are used to present the information, including some slide presentations and graphics your students have created.
Your Monera kingdom group has been doing extremely creative work and has created an impressive presentation on bacteria. The group has received a request by a teacher to use some of their graphics on bacteria cell structure for a project at a school in a nearby state. The students who created the work would get credit for their contribution, and the request is for two graphics out of over a dozen in the presentation.

How do you advise your students?

A) Form the technical response to the request1. Inform that students that the decision is up to them.2. Advise the students to allow the teacher at the other school to use their two graphics for the project.3. Explain to the students that this is a great way to help and even inspire other students in a learning environment.4. Note that it is important for the students to still be given credit for their work.
B) Critical Thinking and Life Lessons1. Tell students that this is an example of how scholarship can catch on and spread.2. Encourage students to self-reflect and see how they could have improved their other images to make them just as desirable as the two that the other teacher selected.3. Educate students that networking is key and that maybe the other group has some item that could be shared.4. Have a discussion about basic copyright permissions as students will probably want to use somebody else's work in the future.
While we feel that the students should be advised to share their work, no matter what decision the ultimate decision is, this is a great learning experience for students.
